I have a lot of books to recommend to you.

Hi Molly--I teach book design and production at Portland State University (as part of the ENGLISH department, not the graphic design department) and I have a list of 16 books that will interest you, too many for this limited response format, I suspect. I also have a day job as a book designer for a publishing company. Your query about books on books is just up my alley. Please email me directly at sapplegate@timberpress.com and I'll email you the titles and authors' names. Regards, Susan

Check and Correct Color Proofs, another great book.

I think one great book of the past decade was "How to Check and Correct Color Proofs" by David Bann & John Gargan. This book divulges a thorough understanding of printing color principles and color proofing communication from the Designer to the Color Service or Prepress shop. Of course, it came out when all that was done with mult-million dollar correction stations, such as Crossfield, and film-based proofing such as Cromalin, etc. However, the principles for color communication given are all the same. And the layout of this book for its day was clean, simple, yet stunning.

Tufte!

All of Edward Tufte's books are good for information design inspiration and tutelage. You can sometimes find them at used bookstores or online (www.powells.com is excellent) for much less than the cover price.

A couple of book suggestions ... and thoughts.

Molly first let me say how happy I am that you pointed out Arnheim's Psychology of the Creative Eye. Great book! I bought at a used bookstore for $5 and I balked at the price. The clerk said it was a classic and I bought it and I agree.

Design/Corporate Books I like: UnStuck by Yamashita, The Graphic Designers's Guide To Clients by Shapiro, Creative Sparks by Krause and It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be by Arden.

Good Books are fantastic, bad books aren't worth the ink

Real World Colour (I'm English) Managment is great leanring if you can get through it.
Stop Stealing Sheep (and find out how type works) Eric Speikerman is brilliantly written and perfect guide for the type-unconcious art director.

Then any magazines you can get hold of, there's always a single article that justifys the value of the mag'. Any tips and tricks to make me a better Mac Operator for InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat or just the Mac.
