CricketDraw?

Regarding Sandee Cohen's article about Macromedia Fontographer - she stated that:

"What was the first BŽzier drawing program for Macintosh computers? No, it wasn't Illustrator. Nor was it FreeHand. The answer is Fontographer, created by Altsys (now part of Macromedia) in 1985."

I might be wrong, but wasn't CricketDraw the first postscript "bezier" drawing program? I seem to recall using that before ever hearing of Fontographer...

What is the point in pitching fontographer?

hi Sandee,
lovely article; sadly reminiscent.

yeah, Fontographer is great, but why are you bothering to pitch it when MM hasn't dusted off the cobwebs since 1996? i remember the red MM boxes, like 3 jobs ago.
:)

next perhaps, you could do an article on photostyler. forgive the sarcasm... i just saw the article and thought, wow, they've resurrected the thing.

The future

If Macromedia wants to gain an edge over Adobe, they should fold Fontographer into Freehand, and add a "Save as Font" filter. Failing that, they should at least incorporate an Export feature, so you can export a selection as a format that the current version of Fontographer will recognize. That way, since they're not upgrading it, it will not become unusable as Freehand evolves.

YES!

I would support an upgrade to this great and useful program. Have used it frequently

Further uses for Fontographer

I originally purchased Fontographer (way back when ..) because you could create special effects with graphics using TypeStyler. This is still a useful technique

Sweet tool

I agree, too. I haven't created or modified a font in years but when I did, Fontographer was THE tool. Excellent user interface.

Also the best tool for transforming font formats -- Windows to/from Mac, TrueType to/from PostScript, whatever.

I wonder if they could make a little hay be repackaging the program (I think it still works on current machines) and giving it a much lower price. I think it would be a good $99 program.

I agree with Sandee!

I know a lot of graphic designers and there are very few who use Fontographer. I use it alot to open Free TT PC fonts and convert them to Postscript Mac fonts. Simple and easy and there are a heck of a lot more free PC fonts available on the Web than Mac fonts! I too have looked for years for an update from Macromedia!
