Mystery Meat!

This site truly is very well designed, however it is obvious that a usabilty expert was not consulted. Forcing users to roll-over the images to discover the sections, pictures that don't correspond the sections they are supposed to represent, and mousovers that don't work over the whole image. Not to mention the use of small italic serif fonts, making them the worst choice for use on the web.
This site is a great example of good design, for print. For websites this is a usability nightmare.

Gmund site a What's Wrong showcase.

Pop up windows prompting you to download, mystery meat navigation (click on the picture, not the destination). Misdirecting and counter-intuitive lists and icons.
Puh-leeze. It it overdsigned, confusing and hard to navigate. Since you can't actually buy product there, what is the point? This is what happens when you give a designer too much time and money and freedom. Just awful.

Thanks, Clay

I can't thank you enough for telling about the Gmund site. This is truly one of the most beautiful and elegant examples of graphic design I've seen anywhere in a long time. The fact that it's on the web makes it even better. The fact that it doesn't use Flash, and does what it does with standard HTML is even better still! Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. Could you please provide more info on the site designers, M/W? I tried to find a site for them, but so far have come up dry.

Class, but...

As I am not a professional designer, I hesitate to comment on this. But I have to say that I was bothered by the appearance of the home page in both Internet Explorer 5.5 and in Opera 5.02 ( my browser of preference.) What appears on the screen is indeed classy, but I wonder why the designers left an entire screen of blank space both to the right and the bottom of the page. It does not seem like a good design element to me, but a suggestion that something was supposed to be there. It looks unfinished. Also, Opera was not able to make use of the mouseovers, and other elements. I disagree strongly with the tendency to design websites which will run only on the stronger and more recent browsers, as it smacks to me of elitism.
