Response to article

Anita,
I sell printing and I also sell design. I did take a look at buying a press and then passed when I looked at the tremendous risk I would have been undertaking given the technological changes evident in this industry.

Making money in any business is difficult -making money in the printing business is extremely difficult because of the inherent change in this business.

Yes, a printer could lose his ass by making one bad decision. That new press could be outdated the day it was purchased by new technology.

Most printers today have had to be good businesspeople otherwise they would have been out of business years ago.

How about taking your 40lK money and investing that money in a press. I, for one would not because I would not want to tie that money up in a piece of equipment and surrounding equipment that could be outdated very quickly.

Even though some printers might be slow to change, I can certainly understand their reluctance to change because in most cases, it means the investment of a lot of money.

Good observations totally wrong conclussion

Yes printers are conservative sometimes new technologies are worse than the old. Sometimes vendors rip printers off with their bleeding edge tech. They turn them into beta testers. A designer can use whatever new software they like. Will it rip? Will it rip properly when it gets to the filmhouse. NO is the answer. Go ahead do whatever you like the film houses make great money fixing "Designers" files. I really wish you people would use people from Prepress not design oriented people to comment on this part of the business as what was talked about in this article is one of the biggest problems in the business. At least ask somebody who has experiance before making these broad statements.
