More articles like this one please.

I really appreciate articles like this one that provide references and resources on how to deal with the day-to-day challenges of our industry.

I have many of these books and while they contain good advice and information, that advice is not always practical. For example, my larger clients only pay for work done with a purchase order. "Purchase Order" means client contract on client terms. Usage, payment terms, arbitration, late fees and any other rights a designer might include in a legal agreement are over-ridden when using a purchase order number on an invoice.

The second item is one you mentioned. Rates. We really need some standards. If you want an example of bad designer deals, take a look at www.creativemoonlighter.com where logo and corporate branding packages are priced between $1 (one) and $250. Often solicited on the "submit your designs up front and we will pay one of you for the design we like" plan.

Two things designers should never do...
Work for Hire and Work on Spec
They are both becoming standard business practices that need more exposure in these types of publications.

Grumble, grumble.
