I guess I've come to this tutorial a little late but it provides a good intro to using the raster effects and gradient mask in particular. I'd always wondered why you couldn't add or apply an alpha setting to a colour in a Freehand gradient so you could fade to transparent tones. Thanks to this, I now can.
