This is the situation in Australia too. Many job ads for designers specify print and web skills and web skills often require more than just HTML. I think there is an opportunity however for print designers to embrace web standards as the logic of the style sheet is one we are all familiar with.

One thing I have noticed on a negative note is the wages many employers are willing to pay graphic designers is in the can around $10 per hour (maybe a little more). Not only that, on top of being a good graphic designer many expect coding skills like, HTML, Java, Java Script and more. I will wait and see how solid this economic turnaround will be for graphic designers. I hope the wages improve.
