Consider the light source first!

The shadow technique is effective. however, If the subject was rotated counter-clockwise it would make the shadow more realistic. Unless the work is intentionally abstract the light source should always be considered first before applying a shadow. The type of lighting should also be evaluated if you don't want your work to look like a rookie did it.
