Displacment maps and vector images?

What if you're using a vector image that goes on the bottom? For example, an accordion or something with ridges that you've created using Illustrator and you want to use a textured background image (a photograph) on this accordion? Does the displacement map work on that or does it only work if your bottom image is a photo of some sort?
