Lens Blur could be Method 5

The Lensblur filter in Photoshop can create a more realistic, photographic DOF. Check out this tutorial
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/photoshop/articles/phs8pplensblur.html. You will still need to make masks to isolate objects.
