When I'm calling someone (even over skype) and I just hear the phone ringing, I still reflexively mutter "one ringy-dingy .. two ringy dingies ..." LOL. When I read your subhead "Is the party to whom I am speaking?" I cracked up. (If none of this is making sense, you must be under 40 yrs old and never saw any of these classic Lily Tomlin sketches from Laugh-In tv show).
Also ... just a couple years ago, I was helping my 70-something Mom with her phone bill and trying to figure out why it was so high. Part of the superfluous billing was something like $3.95/mo. for leasing her phone from AT&T!!!! I tried to tell my Mom that she didn't need to lease her phone anymore, that it was an error from the phone company, and she didn't believe me at first. I had to get AT&T on the phone and confirm it with her.
This was an excellent and thoroughly interesting essay. Thanks!
