Enjoyable and helpful tutorial. I tried it and it worked great. One additional thing I did was feather the selection about 5 pixels after making it. This helps to soften the edges a bit more, so that when you apply the blur it looks even more realistic.

Light beams aren't flat surfaces. Volumetric lights are never flat. Try again.
