WebAssist

I'd like to see more reviews of WebAssist products.

Actually, I've bought their programs but not yet used them. It is useful to me to see an independent perspective like CreativePro.

One thing I do not like about WebAssist is their update process. Their product line is extensive, and does not have an automated mechanism like Software Update. So simply managing the licenses can be a real task.

On the other hand, one feature of WebAssist licensing I absolutely love -- WebAssist does better than anyone else, period. From the user portal of their website, you can reset your licenses once per day. When my MacBook Pro was stolen in Houston last Thanksgiving, loss of software licenses was much worse than the hardware loss. In particular, I lost 5 USB dongles that were inside the laptop bag.

With WebAssist, there is no hardware dongle. In fact, with a single button push in the WebAssist customer portal, I was able to revoke all the licenses installed on the stolen laptop, even though I no longer had access to it.

Unless you have been through this ordeal, you have no idea. Backups protect data, but no matter how prepared you may *think* you are, you will find all your preparations a joke. The police and insurance companies fixated on hardware loss. The cop who took my theft report was obviously bothered. He commented, "Nobody I know has ever paid more than a thousand dollars for a computer, but I have never taken a report on a stolen laptop valued less than $5,000." The entire ordeal was like being raped, then told it was all my fault. BTW - I was away from the car only 15 mintues, and the entire incident was captured on security video in a retail parking lot.

Almost a year later, I am still suffering and recovering from this theft. I have long lists of heros and zeros. But WebAssist is at the top of the hero list because recovery of my software licenses was completely simple. And fast. I didn't have to plead with them on the phone, and they didn't make me get notarized copies of a police report from a cop who was never going to itemize software, and no insurance labyrinth wasting more time than the purchase price of the software was worth. Thank you WebAssist!
