Adobe Lightroom Mobile Comes to Android. Sort Of.

What was that loud rumbling noise I heard last week? That was the collective “Yes!” of Android users as they learned Adobe’s mobile version of Lightroom was now available to them. As a long-time Mac user, I remember cheering every time a coveted software title became available on my platform of choice.
It’s true that the photo-editing app is finally available for the Android platform, but for now it’s limited to phones running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and later with at least 8 GB of internal storage. Features are also limited, but are on par with its iOS cousin. So while you can sync your collections and file metadata and access and edit files stored on Creative Cloud, you won’t have access to your editing presets. Android users will also miss out on the commenting feature which is in the iOS version. Since Lightroom Mobile is a companion service, you’ll also need a Creative Cloud subscription.
Why Adobe released Lightroom solely for phones running Android is—as are most software company decisions—a mystery not known to those of us in the trenches. The phone version does a good job of taking much of the selection process—such as flagging, rejecting, and liking images—mobile. Given that using Lightroom on the iPad is far superior to that on the smaller screen of even the largest iPhone, the Adobe-promised Android tablet version should be much appreciated. Patience, Grasshopper. Patience.
