Creative Coverage of the Obama Inauguration

Many creative pros have already or soon will be connected to the Obama presidency. Here are just four examples, two of which give you a first-hand look into today's inauguration.

Shepard Fairey's Obama posters were everywhere last year:

Now you can put yourself into this iconic image, courtesy of Paste Magazine. Just upload a photo of yourself (or your friend, your pet, etc.), choose your own message, et voila!

Presidential EXIF Data
When the guy at the top changes, many other positions change, too, including that of the official White House photographer. Pete Souza is the new photographer, and he answered Obama's call for change by taking the president's official portrait with a digital camera -- yet another historic first.

Camera nerds rejoice: Because Souza shot the portrait digitally, you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the occasion courtesy of the file's EXIF data. Observe:

Souza used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II for the session.

Flickr Focuses
There have been many individuals posting their inauguration-related pictures to Flickr over the past several days, a trend that will see a sharp spike today. Because it's impossible to see all of them, you may want to concentrate on Flickr's official multi-user inauguration pool and the Presidential Inaugural Committee Flickr stream.

Photosynth Captures 12 PM ET
Microsoft's Photosynth stitches together 2D pictures and interpolates them into a 3D image. The more angles and photos Photosynth has to work with, the better it does, which makes this inauguration -- the most photographed of any so far -- an ideal subject.

CNN will use Photosynth to combine photos from its staff and from anyone else attending the inauguration, and display the results at cnn.com/themoment.

Although Photosynth runs only on Vista and XP currently, there is an experimental Silverlight-based Photosynth player for other platforms. I installed the experimental viewer and had no problems, though I can't guarantee the same experience for everyone.

I'm sure I missed many other examples of creative pros' involvement. Click the Comments button below to let me and other readers know what else is going on!

Fairey's Obama portrait in National Gallery

How great that this got into the permanent collection. Just another example of the change that this country is going to see.
