Last month, I received an email message from someone setting up a new graphic design department at a university. Her design library budget was limited, so she was looking for must-have book recommendations. While it was a hard question to answer because "must-have" depends on the goals of the program and the students, I told her five that I wouldn't want to be without:

The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.

Grid Systems by Josef Müller-Brockman.

How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul by Adrian Shaughnessy.

Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton.

The Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, and Jill Butler.

Must Have Book!

The Mac is Not a Typewriter by Robin Williams

Should be required reading for EVERYONE with a keyboard and not just Graphic Designers. Anyone who refuses to read it should be beaten with a rolled up copy until they capitulate!
