Extracting Flames in Photoshop with Russell Brown

17

Through a special arrangement with Adobe, creativepro.com will be posting nifty Photoshop tips and techniques by none other than Russell Brown, Adobe’s digital imaging guru and Photoshop maestro. As one of the original contributors to Photoshop, Russell knows the program inside and out. Don’t know who Russell is? Find out!

In this PDF tutorial, “Extracting Flames,” Russell shows you how to extract flames from one image (rather tricky to do) and then mask them into another. Hot stuff indeed.

This is the first of many tutorials penned by Mr. Brown that you’ll find on creativepro.com.

To get started, open the PDF file.

To open the PDF, you’ll need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Get it here.

RUSSELL BROWN is the Senior Creative Director at Adobe Systems, and an Emmy Award-winning instructor. He shares his delight in testing the creative limits of his tools, and his in-depth design knowledge and zany presentation style has won him a regular following among beginning, intermediate, and advanced users alike.

I often am not able to open articles from your site. This time it was an encoding error, other times the link isn’t there.

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. We check and recheck all links before we post them. This story was tested on both Mac and Win platforms and none of our testers experienced any difficulties. After reading your note we investigated, and we cannot reproduce the error. If you continue to have trouble please go to https://creativepro.com/site/contact/index.html and send us an email.
    Thanks,

It’s this kind of tip that one might never discover on one’s own. I would have gone about it in an entirely different, much more convoluted fashion.

thanks for adding Russell Brown’s Voice to the Creativepro forum.

Not that we don’t all like PDFs – if they PRINT correctly. But this poorly-constructed file doesn’t do that well, neither.

The content is useful, and fortunately, I have a 3-monitor Mac. Good damned thing, too, since the .pdf file is truly screwed up..

I saw the reference to the Flames article on the Imaging page. I clicked on a button that indicated “Full Story” to be taken to another page with just an introduction and a button that said to begin by clicking it for PDF. And it always brings up Apache message saying “You don’t have permission to access /content/en/files/story_images/ExtractFlames.pdf on this server.” I’m logged on to the site. What’s up?

The PDF File states “Access Denied.”; therefore, I cannot view it to comment on it.

Please get this fixed and let me know when/if you do.

    Thanks!

Sorry to be dense. Extracting flame tutorial looks wonderful. Is it assumed I have flames? Was I supposed to bring my own flames? Thank you. DC

I’ve been trying to make photoshop work for me but it kept my head spinning. I’ve been reading a lot of photoshop books online and hopefully I can make it work this time.

It’s this sort of tip that one may never find individually. I would have gone about it in a completely unique, significantly more convoluted form.
