If the WSJ Reports It, Is the Apple Tablet Still a Rumor?

Rumors about a tablet device from Apple are nothing new -- they've been running rampant for months. Some people say the sheer amount of speculation is proof that the device exists, but lots of people also believed Y2K would bring technology to its knees, and we know how that turned out.

However, when the normally reputable Wall Street Journal speaks, I tend to listen more closely. A short article posted on the Wall Street Journal Web site today says that "people briefed by" Apple have confirmed that the company "plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month" and could ship the product in March. (The article, unfortunately, is available only to subscribers.) These same anonymous yet well-informed people say the tablet will have a 10- to 11-inch touch screen.

You may wonder why anyone would want a tablet if they already have a laptop, netbook, or smart phone. According to the WSJ article, Apple thinks the tablet could "redefine the way consumers interact with a variety of content." For examples of what might be possible, see "Pimp My Publications." And check out the excellent New York Times article "A Savior in the Form of a Tablet," also published today, for more on the ways tablets and other e-readers may affect content creators.
