ITC Releases Complete Typeface Collection in OpenType Format

International Typeface Corporation has converted its entire inventory of typefaces into the OpenType® font format. In all, more than 1,300 ITC® OpenType products can be purchased from www.itcfonts.com.
“From timeless text families to contemporary display designs, ITC has always provided valuable typographic resources to creative professionals,” said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at ITC. “With the demand for OpenType growing rapidly, this powerful and comprehensive collection of fonts will be used by graphic designers for years to come.”
ITC OpenType fonts provide several new benefits to users, including cross-platform compatibility between Macintosh® and Windows® computers, the ability to access alternate characters without switching to a different font, and intelligent character substitution such as replacing multiple characters with ligatures. In some cases, new characters have also been created specifically for the OpenType versions of the typefaces.
ITC’s offering includes many widely used text and display type designs, such as the ITC Franklin Gothic® typeface, commonly seen in newspapers and advertising for headline work. This sans serif design of the grotesque style emerged in the late nineteenth century. Another example is one of ITC’s most popular designs, the ITC Officina® family, available in sans, serif and display variations. The ITC OpenType lineup also includes the ITC Stone® family, featuring sans, serif, informal and humanist subfamilies that can be used interchangeably.
ITC has also introduced the ITC Edwardian™ Script and ITC Avant Garde® Gothic families in the OpenType Pro format. Several alternate characters previously not available are included in the OpenType Pro fonts, as well as support for most European and many Central European languages such as Baltic, Turkish, Czech, Hungarian and Polish, in addition to English.
About OpenType
OpenType fonts, which operate on both Macintosh® and Microsoft® Windows® platforms, allow type designers to create large character sets within fonts – up to 65,000 characters – well beyond the 256 characters typically supported by PostScript® Type 1 or TrueType® fonts. Instead of creating multiple fonts, a typeface designer can build a single OpenType font that provides access to characters that would have previously required switching between fonts.
