As far as I'm concerned, Coudal Partner's Layer Tennis justifies the Internet's existence.
Like real tennis, Layer Tennis has seasons, matches, and competitors. But the competitors are all creative pros of one sort or another (Web designers, Photoshop artists, etc.), and the court is the Layer Tennis Web site. In each game, two creative competitors swap a file back and forth, changing it with each pass by adding type, photos, changing colors, maybe tossing in animation or video. A third official participant pulls a Howard Cosell and comments on the changes as they happen. We, the spectators, see the changing files and read the commentary, and at the end of the match, we choose the winner.
While the 2010 season has yet to begin, the first exhibition match is today, February 19. In honor of Photoshop's 20th anniversary, the narrator is John Nack, the principal product manager for Photoshop, and competitors Khoi Vinh and Nicholas Felton will use only Photoshop to alter the files. Khoi Vinh is the design director of The New York Times, and Nicholas Felton is a designer, blogger, and creator of the Feltron Annual Reports.
The Exhbition will be live at 2 PM Central time. Check the time in your area.
