NikonNet and 'Legends Behind the Lens' Honor the Work of Veteran Commercial Photographer John Huet

Sometimes the moment elicits more inspiration than all the preparation in the world. For over 20 years, renowned commercial photographer John Huet has lived by this concept. Considered to be one of the most successful commercial photographers working today, Huet’s images have been seen throughout the world. However, it’s his unique style that often raises eyebrows.
This January, NikonNet’s inspiring monthly, “Legends Behind the Lens,” honors the work of veteran advertising and commercial photographer John Huet. He has photographed some of the most recognizable images in national advertising campaigns for Nike, Adidas, BMW Motorcycles, Microsoft, the NBA, Wrangler, Nikon, and many others.
“NikonNet is pleased to honor the images and extraordinary career of John Huet in this January’s ‘Legends Behind the Lens,'” said Tracy Mack-Jackson, senior manager of Internet Development and Programs at Nikon Inc. “John’s work is so highly sought after for its excellence and creativity. His work, and his unscripted methods, set the bar high for this industry.”
Huet’s methods are a result of his self-confidence and ability to adapt to changing environments. “I like to be able to show up and experiment,” Huet says of his working method. “I don’t make a lot of conscious decisions about a shoot until I get there.” He also doesn’t do a lot of experimenting before the fact. “I’ll say, okay, let’s try this technique or idea. Until I’m actually out there photographing the assignment, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I just go with what I think is right at the moment.”
While some pros would consider Huet’s nonchalance a detriment, proof to the contrary exists in every major national campaign he has photographed. Having photographed hundreds of campaigns with a sports theme, Huet often has to make his models look like natural athletes, a big reason why so many companies seek him out for their ads. While some photographers will focus on film and lighting tests, Huet will explore unique angles, backgrounds, and filters in an effort to get the perfect image. He even draws inspiration from paintings and sculptures.
His improvisational methods make for an edgy way to work, but as Huet says, “That’s my personality. I get bored very easily and have to keep pushing myself.” Some call it living in the moment, but Huet has turned it into a legendary career.
For over 20 years, that drive has been the catalyst to one of the most sought-after and recognized commercial photographers in the world. To learn more about John Huet, log onto NikonNet’s “Legends Behind the Lens” series at https://www.nikonnet.com/legends.
