Turn Letters Into Sketches with Fontify

Fontify 1.0 from Bitongo is a new app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that helps you turn letters into illustrations. You begin by choosing letters from 18 typefaces as the building blocks of your illustration. You can move, rotate, and scale the letters until you end up with something you like, perhaps something like these samples from the Fontify gallery:

The app’s marketing materials heavily emphasize Fontify’s “social” aspect, noting that you can share your illustrations in the Gallery, on social networks, and in email. Creative pros may choose not to embrace the social aspect of Fontify since, as the press release notes, “anyone who sees the sketches can easily use them as inspiration and can continue editing them”. The good news for creative pros is that you can export your font illustrations to scalable vector PDFs.
I haven’t yet tried Fontify, so I can’t say whether its interface is more conducive to font-sketching fun than simply messing about in, for example, Illustrator or InDesign. But since Fontify 1.0 is free, there’s no harm in buying it from the App Store.
