Type Camp Rome
1–8 May 2011
Enjoy Italy in the spring experiencing Rome’s typographic treasures with the experts. Type Camp Rome features seven days of walks around the city examining the Imperial letterform and the Renaissance and more recent results. We’ll visit the epigraphy collection at the Vatican, investigate early burial tombs and hidden churches, make rubbings on 2000 year-old lettering, examine different scripts from ancient times, and much more. As a camper, you will be able to enjoy everything that Bella Roma has to offer from sipping prosecco at the end of the sunny days to celebrating our final night with a festive Roman feast. We guarantee that you’ll never look at letterforms (or Rome!) the same way after this camp.
The Type Camp Rome 2011 teaching team is beloved Professor from the famed Department of Typography at The University of Reading and all-around renaissance-man, Martin Andrews and founder of Type Camp and international typography instructor, Dr Shelley Gruendler.
Type Camp California
18–23 July 2011
Type Camp California will help you rediscover your creativity in typography. All learning takes place over six days by means of differing and convergent approaches to letterforms and type use in discussions, lessons, and workshops. World-reknowned instructors will share their professional processes and typographic knowledge with you to help you to become a better typographer and a better designer. By day, we’ll have typography workshops and by evening, we’ll stroll through the rolling hills of California wine-country. All meals will be prepared by our beloved Chef Linda and will feature fresh local ingredients.
This camp will be held at the lovely Dancing Deer Farm in Templeton outside San Luis Obispo, California. Near the coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the farm is approximately 3 and a half hours drive from either San Francisco or Los Angeles.
The teaching team for Type Camp California 2011 is Head of www.typographica.org and former FontShop Type Director, Stephen Coles; the genius typographic expert ‘TypeGirl’, Tiffany Wardle; founder of Type Camp and international typography instructor, Dr Shelley Gruendler; and a few area type stars just might drop in to visit.
Type Camp India
11–18 December 2011

Type Camp India 2011 will provide you with an opportunity to investigate typographical cultural context while experiencing one of the most intriguing cultures in the world. Every morning is a studio focusing on Tamil typography and design and every afternoon is a workshop where you’ll visit local publishing houses, meet and work with street typographers, visit nearby ancient and modern Hindu temples, hold type walks in local markets, learn Tamil Calligraphy, visit a handwritten newspaper in Urdu, and experiment with silkscreening. You will enjoy custom-prepared Tamil meals featuring fresh local ingredients everyday for lunch and you will taste the wonders of the Chennai cuisine in the evenings as the locals do. We’ll even enjoy a traditional Tamil welcome feast on our first evening and a farewell Indian brunch on our last morning.
With typography expert Dr Rathna Ramanathan, assisted by the wonderful silk screen printer for Tara Books Mr Arumugam (but everyone calls him ‘Mr. A’) and by founder of Type Camp and international typography instructor Dr Shelley Gruendler, you’ll expand your typographic knowledge for today’s multicultural world.
