Readers of a certain age will remember when Emigre released Exocet and Mason, edgy yet elegant type families.

Exocet debuted in 1991.

Mason made the scene in 1992. Emigre recently released it in OpenType.

Both were created by Jonathan Barnbrook, a renowned British designer who now has his own foundry, Virus Fonts. On Virus, you can see what trendsetter Barnbrook has been up to lately.

Sarcastic, designed last year, looks like an evolution of an idea Barnbook explored in 2001's Echelon and Expletive.
