Typography has rules, but it is definitely an art

The spacing demonstration related to the all caps line drove home a point for me, while there are definite rules to good type, there is also an art that is somewhat subjective. While the first example is definitely two tight without adjustment to the All Caps line, in my opinion, the 2nd example adjusted too much when even line color was the goal.

Gene, I believe the best part of your column is how you weave your personal memories into sharing the images and some of the history around them. It is the personal touch that makes the column come to life. Thanks for sharing such touching memories with us so that these images can come to life as we read.
