That Pacific Hell sucks is a given, but your isolated experience in San Francisco is probably misleading. I generally manage around 1Mbps downstream at home (but upstream reaches around 10% of that). Our office uses Mindspring and gets better numbers with much higher upstream bandwidth. Both accounts are the most basic accounts available at the time they were ordered.
