I love Gene's articles because they give us a slice of life in past eras. As a child of the atomic era I remember the food caches and emergency preparations in the Bremerhaven, Germany military base.

I come from a chemical and nuclear engineering background and eventually chucked it all to become a painter, photographer and printmaker. My current passion is the esoteria of color theory and management. My immediate response to the icons was straightforward, that they were like the elements in the periodic table and that the icons were a clever idea.

I enjoy all of Gene's columns but one seemed more amusing than most (I'm a non-smoker but I'm not opposed to people smoking – as long I don't have to breathe it). His pile of reference material (old junk) must be enormous!

Nice timing: I'd been looking at the high pass filter to pull out noise and dirt and wondering at methods for implementing the results

I originally purchased Fontographer (way back when ..) because you could create special effects with graphics using TypeStyler. This is still a useful technique
