Geeks and marketers don't make for compelling celebrities.

The reason there aren't many "stars" of the web is the people who built it. Most important websites are started by geeks seeking respect or marketers seeking CASH. These people are not very interesting to the majority of the websurfing population. The same holds true in the real world: when was the last time you saw a physicist or mid-sized-company CEO hounded by paparazzi?
