1970. Wow.

Comment by ajasys on February 10, 2012

I was a senior in HS that year, and had already read David Olgivy's "Confessions of an Advertising Man", which was a seminal influence on my lifelong interest in ads -- and by extension, the graphics used to seduce consumers.

Sheesh!

I can't believe I made it through my bike riding years, considering that I broke most of those rules more than once -- and a few of them quite regularly. Thanks for the reminder of how blunt some of the public service stuff was back then. No pussyfooting around, it was safety or death! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sanity is a relative concept. If you don't believe me,

Spare Time?

I love these! I remember many such projects from my youth, including our customized soap box derby cars.

Oh my...

...three of the five comments are upset or uneasy with the examples Gene chose that depict the possible death of imaginary animals? Examples that were created in an advertising campaign more than 3/4 of a century ago?

Egads!

My mother was not a nurse (she was a librarian and research historian), but our house always had Lysol in the kitchen and every bathroom - and Phisoderm, as well.

1969!

Comment by ajasys on September 18, 2011

I turned 16 in February that year. What a perfect time to be a teenager: Free love, women burning their bras, the moon landing... Your favorite is 2nd on my ballot, as I find the one that uses Roman numerals as suspenders to be visually pleasing - as well as beautifully representative of the year 1969.

Roy Van Dyke

Comment by ajasys on August 7, 2011

Tidbits for the curious mind: Roy Van Dyke was an English comedic magician, often known for his balloon acts, respected by his peers, and the inventor of the "Van Dyke Bell", a marvelous (and expensive) magic prop. There is very little info online about Roy, but you can see the "Van Dyke Bell" for sale at the link below. http://www.martinbreese.com/trickpages/bell.htm

...for a "Report Comment" option to be added, as it seems the spammers have discovered CreativePro. It was a wonderful decade plus run, but unless you intend to manually police the comments on a daily basis it would behoove you to allow your readers to help out. As I've noted for more than 11 years now, I love the site... and I especially love Gene's glimpses of art & lifestyles past.

So comics ARE good for you

Comment by ajasys on April 10, 2011

I always knew they were! One of my brothers just passed his 10 Year anniversary of sobriety thanks to AA. Although he is the only one of us four who never liked comic books as a kid, he is in favor of any method that gets the word out to those in need of help. Do you have any idea who actually produced the comic and artwork? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Ahh, my Corvair!

Comment by ajasys on February 18, 2011

I owned a 1966 Corvair for more than a decade, and it was one of the most enjoyable cars I ever owned. Of course, by the time my friend and I were done remaking it, it was a Corvair in nameplate only.

Yes, really.

#3 said: "Who is going to go through all the trouble of setting up a web server on their computer... Don't make me laugh" All the trouble? In 15 minutes I had everything installed and running per instructions, and am already deep into my early design choices. I suspect making you laugh would be an onerous task, given your demeaning attitude toward "most people".

I hate to play Scrooge, but...

California Dreamin'

Comment by ajasys on February 8, 2010

While I was growing up in Michigan during the 50's and 60's, all our family vacations were pretty much north or east...with an annual trip to Lake Geneva, WI as far west as we ever got. I didn't mind, as we visited the 1964 World's Fair in New York and Expo 67 in Montreal among our many trips.

That doesn't just take me back...

Comment by ajasys on December 12, 2009

...I think it gave me flashbacks! I love seeing the boldness mixed with what is now seen as design naivete. It certainly seemed fresh at the time, at least to me. But then I remember 8-tracks, Nehrus & waterbeds as well...mostly because I detested all three. Thanks for another brilliant flash of nostalgia, Gene. - - - - - - - - - - Sanity is a relative concept.

Jeepers! Based on these nostalgic photos, it seems I missed all the fun! (Well... perhaps not.)

The Human Connection

Comment by ajasys on August 25, 2009

After almost ten years as a member here, I still turn to Gene's articles first. While I love the imagery of Americana Gene shares, what keeps me coming back is the human touch; the personal connection to his material that gives me a sense of time and place. Gene makes it easy for me to find a commonality between his life and mine, though we are vastly different except in age.

Just keep truckin'...

Absolutely wonderful, Gene. A nostalgic trip back to my younger days of yore, and a capsule reminder of how progress so often results in the loss of something along the way; something we miss, even when we appreciate the changes progress brings. Christmas 1959

My-oh-my yes, I remember that one well... even though I was not quite 7 years old yet. (That came in February)

A warm & fuzzy feeling

Comment by ajasys on December 13, 2008

Once again, Gene Gable warms my heart with another glimpse at who we once were and how we got to where we are. I tried electric blankets a few times when I was much younger, when I lived through some frigid Michigan winters. I never liked them, though; I am so naturally hot-blooded my wife tells her friends that sleeping in the same bed with me is like cuddling up to a 1500 BTU space heater.

Another button pushed, Gene...

...and all you have to do is glance at many comments so far to see what I mean. I see comments that label your opinion "obnoxious", "ignorant", "poor judgment", etc. -- typically from voices defending Fox News who find your opinion "inappropriate" or poorly timed.
