The alphabet cannot be copyrighted.

Many, many moons ago, I attended a BDA conference in Washington DC. At one of the luncheons the guys from House Industries gave a little talk about their craft. They stated that they're biggest obstacle in creating typefaces was the law (or non-law) that "alphabets cannot be copyrighted." They could only copyright the name of the font. So they had no recourse against copycat fonts.
Great article!

Having worked in the television industry for years, I always found the specialized equipment a little over priced myself. Like the telepromter, a number of things could be made yourself if you just put your mind to it. Thanks for showing us how you did it! I also had a co-worker who built his own jib after studying one on a shoot.
