Thorough Article on Spec Work …

Comment by Rick Graf on November 15, 2011

You could spend a lifetime debating the issue of spec work, but your article covers the issue well and makes a solid case as to why spec work and/or CrowdSourcing (or like sites) are bad business. I feel you can tell when someone becomes a professional in the creative field. S/he discovers they're in business to earn a living and/or make a profit.

Thank You Pariah

Please don't despair. I've always found your articles time-saving and enlightening. Thank you. It takes a lot of time to research and write good articles. I know because I've written many in my career. Some are able to install WordPress in under 15 minutes. Some claim they've done it in 5. Others struggle with the install.

Love the History Lesson

I have researched print ads that appeared in popular magazines of 30s, 40s, and 50s. I enjoyed that trek into the past as much as I enjoyed this post of yours. Thank you. Ricky

Quark Promote Commentary

Comment by Rick Graf on January 19, 2010

Is this a move of desperation? Is it a change in marketing strategy to generate a new revenue stream? You have to ask yourself a lot of questions as to why a software developer, if it's a successful one, would do something like that. How about you pose your question directly to someone in the know at Quark? Ricky

Kayak Original Logo

Comment by Rick Graf on November 10, 2009

I concur with the comments already made in 1, 2, 11 & 14. I'd keep the original logo. My eye also says some simple proportioning of the elements might be in order. The outdoor and nature feel of the original logo are in step with the eco-friendly movement. The kayak would certainly work well if this online travel search engine specializes in outdoor trips.

On Fairey vs. Garcia: Thanks John Hoffman

Comment by Rick Graf on February 18, 2009

Thanks John Hoffman for your legal commentary. It was refreshing to read. If Garcia scanned Shepard's photo, then used an image editing software application to mechanically alter the image, then he legally (maybe not in someone's artistic opinion) infringed on Shepard's rights. Ricky

I like the clean look of the new design. That's important, but secondary to great content, which is the main reason I have enjoyed a long relationship with Creative Pro.

Lacks simplicity, clarity and elegance

Comment by Rick Graf on June 14, 2007

Malcom Grear says it best for me: He sees a logo as simple tool with a straightforward function. Anything that gets in the way of that function weakens the effectiveness of a logo as a tool. He says to keep it simple and calls for simplicity, clarity and eleganceâ€"elegant enough to appeal to many viewers to make it memorable.

Propriety Fonts Protected by Law

Comment by Rick Graf on February 20, 2007

The original font makers have legal recourse against those who infringe on their fonts if their fonts are legally protected. Those who play with fire will eventually burn themselves. There are also ample warnings in place, such as the dialog that pops up, when you include fonts with your print file.

Brand Phobia

Comment by Rick Graf on January 4, 2007

After years of building their brand identity successfully with each product brand logo, why would Adobe trash that, only to now stand naked in the marketplace? Familiarity and personality are marks of successful brand building and traits of brand equity. They do not happen overnight, nor do they come cheap. Luckily for Adobe, the company has no serious competitor to pounce on this.
