A Cardboard Digital Camera?

IKEA, a pioneer in do-it-yourself, inexpensive, flat-box furniture, has taken that ethos into a new direction: a cardboard digital camera.

The camera is literally a cardboard box that's held together with two plastic screws. It's fueled by two AA batteries and has a pop-out USB connector for downloading images. The viewfinder? A hole in the cardboard.

The rumbling in digital photography swelled to a roar last week when Canon U.S.A. announced the EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera, the newest in a line of cameras that first appeared 25 years ago. Its predecessor the 5D Mark II was already considered a "game-changer" by many photographers, so anticipation has been building for the 5D Mark III.

Kodak Tosses Digital Cameras in the Dustbin

It's official: First they took our Kodachrome away, now Kodak is doing away with its digital cameras, too. The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, has decided "to phase out its dedicated capture devices business — comprising digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames — in the first half of 2012." Kodak plans to focus on online and retail-kiosk image processing as well as inkjet printers.

Olympus Releases Another Micro Four-Thirds with Retro Look

The first model in a new line of cameras from Olympus has been announced. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) system digital camera, meaning that it accepts interchangeable lenses that are compatible with the MFT system. Because MFT cameras don't use mirrors, they can be smaller than traditional SLRs.

The $1,299 E-M5 comes with a 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 lens and shoots both stills and HD video. Its sensor captures 16MP of data, and its ISO range extends up to 25600.

Three New Sony Cyber-shot Digital Cameras

Sony has announced three new models in its Cyber-shot line of point-and-shoot. The most impressive is the $500 DSC-TX200V, which captures stills and HD video with an 18.2MP sensor. It can focus in as few as 0.13 seconds when you're shooting in daylight; when the light's low, it still needs only 0.25 seconds to focus.

The TX200V is waterproof, freeze-proof, and dust-proof, yet it's not housed in a hulking case. Instead, it looks more like a sleek new iPhone:

Nikon has announced the D4 digital SLR, a camera that's causing quite a stir despite relatively moderate changes to its still-photo features. Perhaps one reason for the buzz is the fact that the previous model, the D3S, was announced way back in the fall of 2009. Fujifilm just announced a slew of new cameras — 19, to be precise — but only three of those can shoot in Raw. And if you want to get the best out of your photos, Raw is infinitely superior to JPG. Open a Raw image in Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, or your image editor of your choice, and you can make a lot of improvements without losing any data. It certainly has saved some of my pictures from the trash.
