The Best App for Managing Digital Assets

Photoshop is an excellent tool for many things, but it's no digital asset manager. The most successful workflows require Photoshop plus something else: Lightroom or Bridge. Which one is best for you depends on a lot of things.

In choosing between the two programs, you'll need to answer these questions:
• Are you new to photography?
• Are you a small studio or a large studio?
• Are you a high-volume shooter?
• Are you a designer, photographer, or both?
• Are you comfortable with computers?

Then you'll want to consider the advantages of each app.

Photographers, take note! You can try out a major update to Adobe's Lightroom software for free. Just download the Lightroom 4 beta from the Labs area of adobe.com.

Because this is an early beta, don't use it for production work. In fact, Adobe recommends that you limit your use to duplicates of files. In addition, Develop settings applied in the Lightroom 4 beta may not transfer to the final version of Lightroom 4.

An iPad is a great tool for showing off photographs, whether you're in an office or on the road. It's light and small, and the backlit screen means that your work practically glows. The only downside is that the colors can be off, since there's no way to calibrate the iPad's screen.

Digital photography has many advantages over film, but perhaps the most significant is the in-camera histogram. This simple tool lets you immediately spot potential exposure problems as you shoot. Once you're done shooting, the histogram in your image-editing software shows you what's wrong with an image and how to adjust tone and color.

The histogram scares a lot of people because it looks like it has something to do with math. While there are a lot of numbers behind it, the histogram is actually easy to understand.
