Photoshop CS6: 10 Time Saving Layer Tips

If you've been using Photoshop for some time, then you've used layers. Layers are the workhorse of your workflow. With them you do everything from silhouetting images, applying tonal adjustments, making comps, adding fills, and so on and so on.

But with every version of Photoshop, Adobe adds more functionality to layers. In Photoshop CS6, there are several important new features, such as the capability to assign blend modes, fills, or opacity to multiple layers simultaneously.

Here's a little-known gem: Adobe has created a free iPad app that lets you learn Photoshop through interactive tutorials. The Tutorial Player for Photoshop includes 12 step-by-step tutorials that teach image-editing tasks.

As part of the launch of Creative Suite 6, Adobe reported the results of a study it commissioned about creativity in global economies. The study, entitled State of Create, sought to discover the attitudes people have about creativity and the extent to which they feel they are able to express their creativity.

Pinterest Now Has Flickr Attribution

There's been a lot of excitement about Pinterest and there's been some backlash, too. There's been some concern about who "owns" Pinterest content, a complaint that's been compounded by the lack of attribution for photographic content. Because a lot of great photos are found on Flickr, those images are often not credited.

A Cardboard Digital Camera?

IKEA, a pioneer in do-it-yourself, inexpensive, flat-box furniture, has taken that ethos into a new direction: a cardboard digital camera.

The camera is literally a cardboard box that's held together with two plastic screws. It's fueled by two AA batteries and has a pop-out USB connector for downloading images. The viewfinder? A hole in the cardboard.

Once again, with Creative Suite 6 the Photoshop team has surpassed itself. Photoshop CS6 is a serious release that brings specialized improvements targeted at specific types of users: painters will like the new Airbrush tips that project ink and the Erodible Brushes; photographers will be pleased with the new tool for correcting wide-angle images; and, in the Extended version, engineers and scientists will appreciate the revamped 3D tools.

Image-Editing Review: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4

Pros: Improved develop engine extracts surprising dynamic range out of single images. White balance and noise reduction added to local adjustments. Soft proofing brings more predictable output. Book module much easier than learning a layout program. Map module takes advantage of geotagging. Huge price drop.

Cons: No face recognition. Much larger install than Lightroom 3. Awkward video adjustment process, and slide shows can’t include video. Modular design is sometimes limiting.
