Two Cautionary Tales
The world can be a very small place. Just ask Danielle Smith, a blogger in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. She was informed by a sharp-eyed friend in Prague that her family's photo had been illegally snagged from the Web and used to sell groceries on a Czech storefront, of all places. According to the National Public Radio story on the theft, Smith says that the next time she posts a photo online, she'll "either lower the resolution or watermark the image."

On the flip side of that equation, I recently spoke to a designer -- I'll call him Ned -- whose client insisted on an image Ned had downloaded as a comp from an online stock photo agency. The catch? The client wouldn't pay for the image rights. Because the project was output at a relatively low resolution on a desktop inkjet printer, the comp image was sufficient, so Ned reluctantly agreed. However, he was later contacted by the stock agency, which found the image on the portfolio section of Ned's Web site.

The moral of these stories: Think twice before you post your work online or use the work of another without permission. The world is watching.
