Editor's Corner: Seeing with the Third Eye
Ben Long and Steve Simon recently told me about a group of photographers who've been meeting for two years and already have two gallery exhibits under their belts. In worldwide news coverage, their work has called "deeply expressive," "significant," and "rich."
Two photos by group members Leah and Sonia:
Here's the thing: Every member of this group is blind, so they can't rely on the usual cues sighted photographers take for granted. Instead, they're guided by sound, smell, touch, taste, and imagination.
The founders of the group, sighted photographers Iris Darel-Shinar and Kfir Sivan, familiarized themselves with their students' world by taking pictures while blindfolded.
In the next week, I'm going to try the blindfold method. I'll post what I come up with at www.creativepro.com/node/63294. I hope you do the same.

P.S. On another topic entirely: Even if you don't normally enter contests, check out this week's prize. It's worth almost $1,000!

Wacky Web Site of the Week
Tip o' the hat to Daniel Gaugler of PrintingForLess.com for passing on this week's site, Strange Maps. Among the many things you'll see charted here: regional names for carbonated beverages, the world as seen by a 15th-century sailor, and today's Eastern North America as seen by Aer Lingus -- or rather, Err Lingus.
