A Pirate's Life for Me
Ahoy, mateys! Th' ADIM X Conference ended Saturday
night, 'n all the crew had a roarin' good time. This year's theme was "pirates," 'n
I haven't yet reverted to me normal speech habits, as ye can tell.
Russell Brown wore his usual outrageous costumes, though
many attendees gave him a run for his money. To see a few photos of the frivolity, go
to http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/25443.html.
With every year, the projects ADIM attendees create reach new levels. This year, the main
project was a point-of-purchase display we each designed to showcase our posable action figures.
Here's the incredible part — each attendee had an image of his or her head captured with a
3D scanner, and Gentle Giant Studios used those digital
files to produce action figure heads that look just like each of us. I don't yet have a photo
of my action figure, but here's Russell Brown's face on Johnny Depp's body:

ADIM is like a summer camp for creatives that you never want to leave. I hope you can make it next year.

Dreamweaver CS3 Review
Our CS3 review extravaganza winds down with Tom Negrino's look at the new version of Dreamweaver. He reports
that it makes CSS easier to use and puts the power of Web 2.0 features in the hands of designers who aren't
codeheads. However, the upgrade isn't for everyone.
"A big hurdle for designers in using CSS for layout has been getting started; the CSS that produces good-looking
layouts is often complex and requires a deep knowledge of how CSS works. Adobe has solved this problem by providing
32 layout templates with a variety of design elements. For example, you can choose between templates with one,
two, or three columns, with fixed or elastic column widths, that expand or shrink to fit the width of the browser
window."

Create Cool Effects with a Lens You Build Yourself
With a tilt-shift camera lens, you can capture amazing images — as long as you're willing
to pay more than $1,000 for the lens. Here's how to create your own lens for the cost of a
few humble materials.
"With this lens, you focus (or selectively un-focus) by squeezing the lens and plunger down,
bending it, and twirling it around. To give a miniature effect to a cityscape, tilt the lens
forward or backward so that the only things in focus are in the middle ground, in mid-frame
horizontally. The blurred foreground and background simulate the look produced by a macro lens
taking a close-up of something small."

Opening Up About OpenType
OpenType is becoming the font format of choice, but there's still a lot of confusion about this
relatively unexplored technology. This month's TypeTalk column is devoted to OpenType.
"Q. Can you mix PostScript (Type1) fonts and OpenType fonts in the same document?
A. Yes, you absolutely can! OpenType fonts can coexist peacefully with other font formats in your
library, font-management utilities, and in documents, so there's no need to deactivate or toss
out your pre-OpenType font library."

Repetitive Stress Injury Is for Wussies
Today's publishers are more likely to be afflicted with repetitive stress injuries and tension
headaches than with the lead poisoning and tuberculosis that plagued printers of yore. But as
Gene Gable finds, stress is a perennial ailment.
"The printing trade, like many during the industrial revolution, was not big on worker safety.
According to the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs, 'the average life expectancy of printers
in the early 19th century was 28 years. This was caused by filthy working conditions and long work
hours, often 11 hours per day, seven days a week'."

Project Management for Creative Professionals
Except for the simplest jobs, most projects call for you to be not just a creative, but also a manager.
Eric J. Adams come through once again with advice to help you successfully manage people, projects,
expectations, and deadlines.
"Put your goals in writing. It may sound obvious, but if you don't have an end-point in mind, how will you
know if you've gotten there? Start by clearly stating the goal of your project in a single sentence that
everyone can understand: 'A Web site redesign that improves the user experience and integrates more readily
with back-end services and applications.' 'A new tri-fold brochure with a shelf-life of at least 12 months
that updates the company image.' And so on."
