Editor's Corner: Get a Glimpse of the Future
Adobe may be refuting all Internet rumors about an October 2008 ship date for Creative Suite 4, but the company didn't strengthen its case with yesterday's release of public betas for Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Soundbooth. Observe this screenshot from the Fireworks installation I just performed:
See that "CS4" in the upper-left corner? While it's true that the occasional Adobe beta has had a long life -- Lightroom 1.0 was in beta for 13 months -- a protracted beta period doesn't make sense in this case. I'm guessing that Adobe won't risk slowing sales of CS3 for too many months.
Here's a peek at the new Fireworks in action: a banner ad with variable data placeholders (click on the image to see a larger version):
To join me in looking into software's future, download and install one or more of these betas from the Adobe Labs. If you don't have a CS3 license, you can run the apps for 48 hours. If you do own CS3, you can run the apps until CS4 comes out -- whenever that may be.
For information on the new features, see the press release.
