  Who Owns That Image?
Have you ever browsed the Web for image inspiration, found the perfect photo for a project, and then been unable to track down the image owner? I've certainly been in that situation. I'm left with two choices, neither of them good: use the image without permission, or substitute another image that's less than perfect but is from a known source.

PicScout's ImageExchange hopes to make this scenario a thing of the past. Once you install the ImageExchange Web browser plug-in, images that are registered in PicScout's database have a little "i" symbol next to them. Click on the symbol and you get all the information you need to license the image.

The ImageExchange has a ways to go before it can help us all. For one thing, the add-on (still in beta) is currently only for the Firefox browser. Also, the PicScout database, while large, doesn't yet include all stock photo vendors, much less individual photographers.

But it's a promising start. If you want to check out ImageExchange, register for the free beta. For more about PicScout, see the article "Web Browser Add-On IDs Image Ownership."

Get the Nesting Instinct in InDesign
Maybe you already understand how useful styles are. But have you tried InDesign's nesting styles? They let you pre-build one or more character styles into a paragraph style and trigger those character styles with specific conditions; for example, InDesign will bold the beginning text in a paragraph until an em dash appears.

Author Michael Murphy automatically formatted this entire series of paragraphs with prebuilt styles:
