    Pay What You Want

Have you heard of the Lost Type Co-Op? It's a type foundry with a very different business model: Pay what you can afford. All of the designers take part voluntarily and agree to the terms. The Lost Type founders, Riley Cran and Tyler Galpin, don't see any percentage of the font sales — it all goes to the type designers.

I doubt I'd use Lost Type for a book or magazine text typeface; I'd rather rely on a veteran type designer when it comes to workhorse fonts. But for display type, Lost Type is an interesting alternative. Plus, the designs of the type specimens can be as inspirational as the typefaces themselves.
