When It's Good to Think Inside the Box
We're all awash in advertisements. While it can be tiring, I do love discovering clever alternatives that cut through the white noise; for example, the recent ad campaign from Mini Amsterdam.
Just after Christmas, the company created "trash piles" on Amsterdam streets of used ribbons, crumpled wrapping paper, and large cardboard boxes that appeared to be Mini Cooper packaging. As you can see in the video below, the boxes were definitely attention-grabbers. (If the video doesn't play in your email program, head over to YouTube.)

On the Track of Good Type
When laying out print publications, your type's overall spacing (better known as its tracking) is probably the most versatile type tool you have. James Felici explains how, why, and when to control it.
One of Jim's tips: One tracking setting does not fit all typefaces. Both of the following examples have had their tracking tightened by the same amount, but the results are quite different.

Scanning Around With Gene: Coffee in My Cup
It may seem like coffee has grown in popularity recently, but it’s always been a world-class beverage and in America, a heavily advertised one. Gene Gable has discovered excellent examples of coffee ads dating from 1942 to 1963.

Mix It Up with Creative Indents
Some layouts call for traditional ways to separate paragraphs. Other times, Ilene Strizver says, you can add a little visual interest with something more unusual.
