    New Web Address Endings: TheSkyIsThe.Limit

Can you imagine URLs that end not in .com or .uk, but .WhateverYouWant?

As of today, there are 22 Web address endings (also called top-level domain names). The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has decided to throw open the gates to a world in which just about anything goes, if you have $185,000 and a legitimate reason for acquiring a particular domain name.

Companies with the cash can begin applying for the new endings as soon as January 2012, and the approval process may take as long as a year.

While the new domain names will certainly be a source of headaches, as corporate lawyers battle over the right for one company to own, say, ".camera", I'm excited about the possibilities for innovative thinkers.

Click here for a recording of the ICANN announcement and the press release.
