  Fug-Nique!
In last week's newsletter, I asked you to comment on AOL's new logo. You responded in full force. Here's a small sampling:

• The story headline should read: Strawberry Shortcake and Her Friends Create New Logos for AOL During Kindergarten Art Class.
• But really, was AOL ever respectable? They were the clip-on tie of the internet.
• Perfect except for one thing... Just change the font to Comic Sans. There, now you're done.

And here are a few of the words you used to describe the mark:

• irrelevant
• irritating
• craptastic
• fug-nique

TypeTalk: Step Away from the Computer
Use nontraditional means to get type no one else has. From lipstick on a mirror to letter-shaped junk in a scrap yard, let the examples in this article by Ilene Strizver be your inspiration to explore the unconventional.

For the Earnshaw’s Magazine spread below, Nancy Campbell and Trevett McCandliss placed wood type from a craft store in a water-filled plastic container and froze it.

Them's the Breaks
Forcing lines to break -- or not break -- where you want them to gives you more design control, better type composition, and faster formatting. James Felici explains.

Manually insert a soft return (Shift-Return) to, for example, create flush-left lists in the midst of paragraphs formatted for a first-line indent, as in the following example:
