Does This Logo Work?
When it comes to university identities, I respond positively to logos that look traditional. And yet, I think the modern, hard-edged, almost corporate look of the redesigned University of San Francisco logo is successful.
USF, a Jesuit institution established more than 150 years ago, wanted its new identity system to represent a place that's "dynamic, contemporary, and relevant". The school brought in Studio Hinrichs to work with the creative director of the USF publications department on the logo. Together, they created a mark that references the cross of the previous logo, yet also can be interpreted as arrows that point in and out. The idea of a crossroads is also in the mark.
All of these concepts work with the new tagline, "Change the world from here." The "here" means the city of San Francisco and the campus, but it also refers to the inner "here" of each student's mind and heart.
But what do you think about the redesign? Go to "Is This Change Good?" to see the logo in context and to give it your thumbs up or down.
