Editor's Corner: Et tu, Book?

It used to be that books were a calm oasis in a howling windstorm of technical changes to the way we communicate. No more, as three recent developments prove:

  • Lookybook lets you page through entire books online for free, and embed those books in any Web site. While the idea is to try and then buy, you know how people loooove freebies. The offerings are limited to children's books for now; however, Lookybook has definitely opened the floodgates for all genres.

You can look at this book and many others for free.

  • Google filed for a patent that suggests the average Joe will soon be able to create a custom print publication filled only with content and ads of his choosing.

  • The Kindle e-book reader looks ungainly to me, but some pundits are raving about its advantages over paper. With the power of Amazon.com behind it, Kindle could be the e-book reader that finally succeeds in the mass marketplace.

    Amazon's Kindle.

What about you? Are you ready to give up traditional paperbacks and hardbacks? Let me know!

Expand Your Photography with Specialty Lenses

It's true that more gear doesn't guarantee better photos. But as Ben Long explains (with lots of example images), if you're still using only the basic lens that came with your digital SLR, you're missing out on a world of creative opportunities.

Organize Your Business with an Intranet

Do you lose opportunities or duplicate the efforts of your coworkers because you don't have a central place to track activities or store contacts? How easily can you judge performance and perform costs analyses? Kevin Arthur and Ryan Thomas show how an intranet was the answer to all these needs for Firstborn Multimedia.

Too small to need an intranet? This may be right up your alley:

Contrast and Meaning in Web Design

Follow the evolution of a Web page from an undifferentiated jumble of words to something that looks good, is easy to follow, and spurs the viewer to action. As Andy Rutledge explains, the design essential of contrast is the key to this transformation.
