In the U.S., elections are over and the November/December holiday madness has yet to hit. It's the perfect time for a little silliness that still manages to be topical: an article on the Newseum site called "First Dogs: Raising the Woof in the White House."

According to the article, while past White House pets have included goats and raccoons, dogs have been the most popular choice.

David Hume's photo shows President Gerald Ford with his pooch Liberty. Nice pants, Ger.

The Web site of the Newseum, a brick-and-mortar institution in Washington, D.C., is worth a visit. One of its more popular recent destinations was Today's Front Pages for November 5. Most of the front pages of 735 print newspapers (from 67 countries!) documented Barack Obama's presidential victory.

Closer to home, don't miss Gene Gable's blog entry this week on poodles, a breed that's a strong contender for the next presidential pet.

Cartoonist Lynda Barry has an, er, unusual take on poodles.
