Editor's Corner: Something for Everyone

Apple's announcements at last week's Macworld Expo weren't earth shattering for the creative pro market. The undeniably beautiful MacBook Air is too wimpy to handle our daily workloads. The new iPhone and iPod apps are cool, even useful, but they probably won't make a difference to your bottom line. And the iTunes movie rental service is after-work entertainment, plain and simple.

Yet as I walked the show floor and spoke to companies, I saw plenty to interest creative pros. Insider Software released new versions of its desktop and server font managers, and Extensis previewed its Universal Type Server. Microsoft lifted the curtain on Office 2008, which looks much better suited to us visual types. Could it mean no more whimpering when a client insists that you deliver a newsletter in Word? And there were impressive new printers at the HP and Epson booths, including HP's Photosmart Pro B8850 and Epson's Stylus Photo R1900.

The most intriguing demo I saw was at the Gridiron Software booth. While content management app Flow isn't even in beta, its interface already beats the pants off of most other content managers I've used. You can be sure we'll review the shipping version on creativepro.com.

If you couldn't make Macworld Expo and want an on-the-floor experience, watch Shellie Hall's daily videocasts from the floor.
