Free Trademark Searches
You may remember the hullabaloo in 2005 when Quark unveiled a new logo. And the hubbub in 2006 when Quark withdrew the 2005 logo after claims of copyright infringement and introduced another new mark.

While it may be true that any publicity is good publicity, I doubt Quark was happy about its logo-induced notoriety. It certainly tried to do the right thing, hiring a big-name design firm to create the 2005 logo and using two trademark search companies to look for possible conflicts. And yet almost-identical logos surfaced within days of the 2005 public release.

If a deep-pockets company like Quark encounters those kinds of problems, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Trademarkia believes that it is the answer, at least in the United States. Trademarkia claims to be the "largest, most accurate, and most complete free search engine for U.S. federally registered trademarks... …[with] contextual information about the current use of interesting business names, slogans, and logos through pictures, commercials, and conversations from Flickr, Google, Youtube, and Twitter for each U.S. trademark filed in with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since the year 1870."

Did you see that word "free"? While you might not want to put all your faith in Trademarkia, you won't lose anything by giving it a try. If you do, please let me know -- I might interview you for a future article.

For more about the company, see its press release.
