Editor's Corner: Gossip Girl
Last week, I was cruising a Web developer's blog and came across the name of an Adobe application I'd never heard of.
The blog writer said that this app, codenamed Bordeaux, was still in development but would be targeted at graphic
designers who want to create projects with Flash interactivity but don't want to learn ActionScript, Flash's coding language.
I'm no fan of coding, so I was intrigued and began to research Bordeaux. While I found many posts about it, I was disappointed to learn that they were all based
on something one man surmised
after taking an Adobe market research survey. The Adobe employees I asked about Bordeaux declined to comment. Their lack of
an outright denial was interesting but not conclusive.
Then, finally, pay dirt! Ted Patrick, a product evangelist for Adobe, wrote a blog entry in
which he mentions Bordeaux in the same breath as Flash and Thermo (a
bona fide in-development app that helps designers prototype rich Internet applications).
In case that blog entry disappears after this newsletter is public, I saved the page as a PDF.
My years covering software have taught me the harsh truths that rumors are often more exciting than reality, and that even shipping
applications aren't always as good as they look in early demonstrations. However, I still have hope that some company will finally
meet our urgent need to add full-on interactivity without learning an arcane language. If Bordeaux, Thermo, or any other applications
are the answer, you can be sure you'll hear a lot more about them on creativepro.com.
