The Gap Logo Saga
People sure did get riled up about the new logo for clothing manufacturer the Gap. As you've probably heard, the company debuted this logo last week:
It was met with such immediate and strong scorn on Twitter, blogs, and the Gap's Facebook page that the company quickly back-pedaled from "We love our new logo" to "We love our new logo, but how about you guys show us what you would do instead?" to "You hate our new logo so we're going back to the old one."
I'm glad the Gap decided to drop the crowdsourcing idea, and it was a kick to see the alternate logos designers created for their own amusement. But I'm not so sure that design justice prevailed.
People generally distrust and fear the new. Take the Eiffel Tower. It was reviled when it was built in 1889, and now it's an iconic landmark loved by millions. Add to that the anonymity of the Internet and you have a situation that welcomes knee-jerk reactions, not thoughtful critiques. While the former is easier, we all learn more from the latter.
